In short: We counted the symbols in 23,607 real dreams people shared with DreamApp. Houses, cars and school beat snakes and spiders by a wide margin. See the ranking.
Ask people what they dream about and you will hear the classics: snakes, spiders, teeth falling out. Ask the dreams themselves and you get a different answer.
DreamApp has interpreted close to four million dreams. Most of those are private, and they stay that way. But 23,607 English-language dreams have been shared publicly by the people who had them, and those carry symbol tags, so they can be counted. The result surprised us: the most common dreams are not about monsters or falling. They are about the places and people of everyday life.
Share is the percentage of the 23,607 shared dreams that feature the symbol. A dream can contain more than one symbol.

Further down the list sit the symbols with the biggest reputations: snake appears in 262 dreams (1.1%), spider in 193 (0.8%), and being naked in 243 (1.0%).
A house shows up in dreams about eleven times more often than a snake. A car beats a spider by a factor of ten. School, decades after most of us left it, still outranks every classic nightmare symbol.
This matches what dream psychology has long suggested: dreams mostly recycle the settings, people, and worries of waking life. The scary symbols are memorable, which is why they dominate search queries and dinner conversations. But they are rare guests compared with the house you grew up in.
Houses usually stand for the self: different rooms reflect different parts of your life, and the state of the house often mirrors how you feel about your own inner world.
Cars speak to direction and control. Who is driving, whether the brakes work, and where the car is headed tend to mirror how much control you feel over where your life is going.
School dreams in adults usually surface performance anxiety: being tested, judged, or unprepared. The exam you did not study for is the classic form.
Parents appearing in dreams often carry the qualities we associate with them: care, authority, expectation, or unresolved business.
Water reflects emotion. Calm water and stormy water tend to track how settled or turbulent things feel beneath the surface.
You can explore all 1,538 symbols in the DreamApp dream encyclopedia.
The counts come from the 23,607 English-language dreams that people chose to share publicly with the DreamApp community, counted per symbol on 31 July 2026.
We want to be precise about why that number, and not a larger one. Symbol tagging exists only on shared dreams, so the ranking can only be drawn from them. The wider corpus of nearly four million interpreted dreams supports the emotional findings in our companion piece on what people feel in dreams, but it cannot support a symbol ranking, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
One known bias: this set reflects people who write dreams down and then choose to publish them. That is a different population from everyone who dreams.
In DreamApp's set of 23,607 shared dreams, houses are the most common major symbol, appearing in 11.9% of dreams, followed by cars (8.9%) and school (7.1%). Classic "famous" dreams such as snakes or teeth falling out are far rarer in practice.
Not as common as their reputation suggests. Snakes appear in 1.1% of shared dreams and spiders in 0.8%, while a house appears in 11.9%. Frightening symbols are memorable rather than frequent, which is why they dominate conversation and search.
Because dreams draw on everyday settings first. Houses tend to represent the self and its rooms, while cars reflect direction and control in life. Their sheer familiarity makes them the brain's default stage set.
