One Dream in Four Is a Nightmare: Emotions Across 2.5 Million Dreams

In short: Fear appears in 15% of dreams and one in four is a nightmare. What emotion data from 2.5 million real dreams reveals about what we feel while asleep.

Most dream statistics come from surveys where a few thousand people try to remember last night. We took a different route and measured the dreams themselves.

DreamApp has interpreted close to four million dreams. Emotion analysis exists on 2,552,120 of them, and a further 524,814 include the dreamer's own answers about whether the dream frightened them. As far as we know it is the largest published account of what people actually feel while asleep.

One dream in four is a nightmare

Of the 524,814 dreams where people answered directly:

MeasureShare of dreams
Was a nightmare26.4%
Woke the dreamer up38.5%
Carried negative feelings50.0%

So a nightmare is not a rare event. It is roughly every fourth dream, and nearly two in five dreams are vivid enough to pull someone out of sleep. On a ten point scale, the average emotional intensity people reported was 4.03.

That reframes the usual advice. An occasional bad dream is not a warning sign or a symptom. It is the ordinary texture of sleeping.

What we feel: 2,552,120 dreams

Share is the percentage of those dreams in which the emotion appears. A dream can carry more than one feeling, so the column does not sum to 100.

8Anger59,6552.3%
9Disappointment56,5712.2%
10Disgust54,9512.2%

Desire, grief, curiosity, excitement and amusement each land between 1.3% and 1.7%.

The quiet majority

The single largest category is neutral, at 27.1%. More than a quarter of dreams carry no strong feeling at all. They are simply scenes: walking somewhere, talking to someone, handling an object.

This rarely gets written about, because a dream without emotional charge is not much of a story. But it is the honest centre of dream life, and it is worth knowing if you have ever wondered whether your flat, forgettable dreams mean something is wrong. They do not.

Fear comes second at 15.2%, and sadness third at 11.0%. Together with confusion they explain why dreams so often feel unsettling in the morning even when nothing bad happened.

Why shared dreams look scarier than real ones

Here is a finding that emerged from checking our own work.

When we looked only at dreams people chose to publish publicly, fear appeared in about a quarter of them and confusion in a fifth. Across the full corpus, fear appears in 15.2% and confusion in 6.7%, with neutral on top.

Both numbers are accurate about their own population. The gap between them is the interesting part: people share frightening and confusing dreams far more readily than ordinary ones. Nobody posts the dream where they queued at a bus stop.

It is worth remembering whenever you read a statistic about dreams, including ours. Ask which dreams were counted, and who decided they would be counted.

What to do with your own patterns

If your dreams lately lead with fear, that puts you in ordinary company rather than a warning category, and the useful question is what you are avoiding while awake rather than what the dream predicts. Dreams of being chased and falling tend to cluster around exactly that.

Single dreams matter less than your pattern over months, which is the one thing a survey can never show you and a journal can. You can look up any symbol in the dream encyclopedia, or see which symbols show up most often in our ranking of the most common dreams.

If nightmares are frequent and genuinely disturbing your sleep, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than an app.

About this data

Figures were computed on 1 August 2026 across all dreams interpreted through DreamApp, in aggregate and with no individual dream identified or quoted. Emotion shares are drawn from the 2,552,120 dreams carrying emotion analysis; nightmare figures from the 524,814 where the dreamer answered those questions directly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common emotion in dreams?

Neutral, which appears in 27.1% of 2,552,120 analysed dreams. Among named feelings, fear leads at 15.2%, followed by sadness at 11.0% and confusion at 6.7%. More than a quarter of dreams carry no strong emotion at all.

How common are nightmares?

Of 524,814 dreams where the dreamer answered directly, 26.4% were nightmares, so roughly one dream in four. Nearly two in five, 38.5%, woke the dreamer up, and half carried negative feelings.

Are most dreams frightening?

No. Fear appears in about one dream in six, and the largest single group is emotionally neutral. Frightening dreams are more memorable and more often shared, which makes them feel more common than they are.

Dream

I had a dream i was living with my family in a cozy cabin and we had my dog hoot with us too just laying there. It was around evening and we were outside talking about school pictures and there would be this one guy who would just be there like i had a bad feeling about him but he didnt really do anything. Yet. The weird guy dissapeared. I looked up at the night sky it was so nice perfectly cold air but not cold it was like warm cold and surrounding us were full of plants my grandma planted. Then the weird guy came back… so basically our environment instead of a tent outside I was sitting on the middle, we had a bed where my grandma and sister was sitting down, forward of me were my mom and dad (not on the bed) and the left had a white plastic kids chair. The weird guy came back shortly, and he was on all fours to the right of the white chair like he was mimicking a dog. It was creepy af. Then he was doing some sort of acrobatics onto the chair near us and he did a handstand and started maniacingly giggling threatening that he will kill us (without using his words) like he didnt say anything but he was pointing a gun to my grandma and my other family members. He did threaten us one time but when he did it another and tried stabbing my grandma with a pencil i took action and tried to pull him away like i grabbed his arm and leaned back off the bed but he wa smiling and then this jackass fucking stabbed my grandma in the center of her chest so i got REALLY mad and i got like superhuman strength i guess cuz i pulled him away and put him in supine position i took the pencil and stabbed him hardly in the neck this creep was still smiling giggling how he stabbed my grandma and then i flipped him over into prone position he was now facing the bed and i did this to have him bleed out faster and he did. I saw blood stain the mattress it was crazy. My mom walked in and asked me “omg you killed him?!?” in a shocked manner and I said “yes” in a way to be like obviously this was the right choice he attacked my grandma!! but i remember i was also feeling guilty because I chose to kill him instead of calling the cops—but if I risked that my grandma couldve gotten several punctures from him and died. Thankfully the stab in her chest was small, didnt bleed, and he survived. and then my mom replied “well we cant call the police and you can’t go to jail” so she was implying that we should hide the body and i woke up paralyzed for 5 seconds but no sleep paralysis and i went like “fuck..”

People

Dream

I was at a convenience store and I needed to use the bathroom, so I went inside the bathroom and started putting tissue on the seat. Then the door opened, I got startled. It was a little girl and her dad. The little girl’s father apologized and was going to shut the door back when I said it was fine and his daughter could come inside with me so I could help her pee. There was a line of people waiting outside the bathroom for some reason. I don’t have a daughter, but I have a son. So I didn’t mind. I went to pee first and as I was about to wash my hands to help the little girl pee next. The door opens again and she tells her dad “all done.” I was confused, until I looked down and saw that she peed on the floor. So I asked her, “why did you pee on the floor pretty girl?” And she said “because pee peeing is good🙂” and she ran out lol. Her dad didn’t even offer to clean it. He just left with her.

Dream

I was working at a daycare it was a big building with slides and what not. I bumped into my boss while I was heading to the restroom, he grabbed me by the waist so I won't fall and we had this intense feeling. I moved to get out of his way but then he followed me to the restroom, I was nervous then he kissed me it was the most amazing kiss I ever felt. He was an older man then I pushed him away telling him we can't but then he grabbed me and kissed me again. I couldn't stop it was addicting then we made love in the restroom. When I left the restroom I tried to work and ignore him. I saw him coming to the same direction as me and I turned around to avoid him before he saw me. Then I heard something I turned around and he was on the floor, I grabbed him and he was touching my cheek. I was so afraid, that I told some people around me to call the ambulance but his friend was there and I had his wallet and his friend to come along I had to ask another worker to cover for me so I can go help. I had to go in another car I had 2 other people helping me. We went to the hospital and couldn't find him and I called his friend and he said he went to Mexico with him. When we got there he said that he was long gone, but he killed my boss out of revenge then someone called my name when I was going back to my car and they said it was my boss's will and that whatever he had he gave it to me.

Dream

My family and I had moved to a small home or town house that had its own washer and dryer. My mother and I walked out into the backyard to scope it out and we loved how spacious it was. As I was trying to get my mom’s attention to tell her something, my mom ended up being in the backyard two houses down. As I was catching up to her, I briefly looked into the houses that I passed—I noticed the windows were open because I could here Spanish music playing clearly but there were no lights on so I couldn’t see inside. Once I caught up to my mother, we were standing in the backyard, four houses down—there were no fences seperating them. We couldn’t go to the fifth house because there was a small canal stopping us, so we just looked over—it was a beautiful country home with a big backyard. After admiring it, what looked like a big bear appeared to be under attack by a big group of smaller animals. Most of these animals were cats—there were at least 20—and I watched more of them running to the scene to help attack the “bear”. Some of these animals were half cat half rabbit and many different sorts of breeds. Some of the cats were full bred but bi color—literally half of their body was one color and the other half of their body was another color. One of these cats looked like a cat that used to belong to me before he went missing—he was a tuxedo cat named Mistoffelees. I studied him, and once he noticed me, he gracefully ran around the canal to meet me where I was standing (I didn’t realize that he had been missing in my real life; I usually always realize this phenomenon). But before he was able to reach me, but dog Jasper came up from behind me and started to attack him (Jasper was my dog that died in my real life; I didn’t realize this phenomenon either). I called out to my mother to help me separate them, and I ended up bearhugging Jasper which seemed to calm him down as he started whimpering and licking my forehead–I ended up kissing his chest to reciprocate his love. My mother finally was able to wrap up Mistoffelees in a blue towel–he was soaking wet from being attacked by Jasper. She decided to hand him over to me to hold, but once she did Jasper grabbed him again. All of a sudden I lost my strength and could swoop him back into my arms until finally I did—I ran back to our house with him where he could be safe. I remember laying him down on his back—the towel disappeared—and I watch him stretch his upper right arm up toward the ceiling with his right leg following the movement but stop. He was alive and not showing any signs of pain but he just stayed in that position. It was odd but nothing strange.
