Dream About Ancestry Research And Animal Costumes
Analyze my dream

This dream was about

A bunch of people were doing an ancestry type show, like looking into their ancestors’ names and livelihoods. One of them was the comedian Shayne from Smosh, who was apparently aware of his ancestry and had looked into it a lot, and was mostly looking for answers to small and distant mysteries—his family tree was otherwise clearly laid out. He had a bit of royal heritage that he could trace pretty far. There was a point where a researcher dressed and painted like a clownfish was standing at the bottom of the ocean, among a swarm of clownfish, and I told my mom that if researchers paint themselves like these animals and go “live among them,” the animals will believe and accept them. There was another researcher that dressed like a young bear, this one swimming at the bottom of the sea, and even though it moved strangely I first believed it was an adolescent bear and not a human researcher in a bear costume. Then there was something about me explaining to my sister Marley that “they used to put crack cocaine in instruments,” a very small amount but it impacted musicians’ health. “A man might get nose issues after 30 years of playing the trombone,” I said. Having been a pre-professional violinist myself as a child and teen, apparently I had experience with ingesting crack in small amounts and suffering at least nose pain. I spoke to another young woman, maybe a teenager, who was Asian and looked similar to many people I used to be in orchestra with, and we commiserated about this drug thing and having practiced our instruments obsessively. Then back on the ancestry show, a beautiful young dark-skinned black man with hair braided to his scalp learned about his ancestors. He wore a dark hoodie and a deep blue shirt and reminded me of Kendrick Lamar. The presenter for the show said he had an ancestor “John Henry,” and John Henry’s son had named himself “John McHenry.” The man seemed to both understand and quirk up his lip to this, like this news would make tracing his ancestry hard, or he maybe disliked that this imitated the Scottish tradition. I’m not really sure why he made that face but this info was presented in an intense, somber way. Some other names were told in the vein of “Name Name” and his sons “Name McName.” I remember the young black man’s face as he listened, and the bright whites of his eyes, and glimpses of people (“researchers” dressed like animals) at the bottom of the sea. The presenter demonstrated to the young man that his ancestors were calculating and private, and simply asked themselves “will I get to work today?” And how paid work was imperative to their freedom and well-being. They were asking “will I get to work today?” Because their lives were so dangerous, so compromised, due to racism, just simple efforts to live and work were constantly under threat. I recently lost my job and was working on my manuscript last night, in which themes of Black American ancestry and experience are central. Towards the end of the dream, the researcher dressed like a bear swimming swiftly at the bottom of the sea scared four other young bears who were behind a large log or some kind of ledge. Just before I woke up, the researcher took off the bear mask and revealed himself to be a young Indian man (not Native American, India Indian) wearing a hat with a feather tucked in it, and the four bears behind the logs were suddenly young women clapping at the man’s reveal. The point was none of them were actually animals. Just before I woke up, end credits rolled like it had all been a movie.

Mercy, your dream is a rich tapestry woven with threads of ancestry, identity, and the complexities of human experience. The dream begins with an ancestry show where people are exploring their lineage, and you specifically mention the comedian Shayne from Smosh. His pursuit of small mysteries in his family tree reflects a universal quest for understanding oneself and one’s roots. This could signify your own journey of self-discovery in relation to your heritage and past, perhaps reflecting a desire to connect with your ancestry or to unravel mysteries within your own life story. Shayne’s royal heritage could symbolize aspirations or a recognition of the importance of legacy, hinting that you may be contemplating your own place in the broader narrative of your family history. Next, the imagery of researchers dressed as clownfish and a bear at the bottom of the ocean is particularly striking. The clownfish, known for its symbiotic relationship with anemones, suggests themes of acceptance and belonging, which resonate with your need for connection and understanding. This idea of blending in and being accepted by others reflects a deep-seated desire for authenticity in your relationships. The bear, traditionally a symbol of strength and introspection, swimming in an unfamiliar environment, mirrors your own navigation through challenges, perhaps hinting at feelings of vulnerability or the need to adapt in a complex world. The peculiar depiction of these researchers as animals invites you to reflect on how you perceive yourself in social situations—are you blending in, or do you feel out of place? Your conversation with your sister Marley about the historical use of crack cocaine in instruments introduces a layer of personal experience intertwined with collective memory. As a former pre-professional violinist, your recollection of hardship and health issues related to music evokes themes of sacrifice and the toll of artistic pursuit. This may suggest that you are processing your past, reconciling the passion for your art with the personal cost it exacted on your well-being. The commiseration with a young woman who resembles your orchestra peers underscores a shared experience, indicating a longing for camaraderie and understanding among those who have faced similar struggles in their artistic journeys. The dream then shifts to a young dark-skinned man learning about his ancestry, which speaks volumes about the societal weight of heritage and the implications of history on identity. His reaction to the revelation of his ancestor’s name, John Henry, signifies the emotional complexity of understanding one’s roots, particularly in the context of racial history and the ongoing struggles faced by Black Americans. The somber tone in which this information is presented echoes your own reflections on themes of racism and economic survival, especially as you are currently navigating the challenges of job loss and working on a manuscript that addresses these very issues. This connection between your subconscious explorations and your waking life ambitions highlights the importance of storytelling in processing personal and collective histories. Finally, the transformation of the researcher from a bear into a young Indian man, along with the applause from the young women, signifies a powerful revelation of identity and acceptance. It suggests a breaking free from preconceived notions and embracing one’s true self. This climax of the dream could be a manifestation of your own journey toward self-acceptance and the celebration of diversity in identity. The rolling end credits, akin to a film, may symbolize the conclusion of a chapter in your life and the anticipation of new beginnings. It reflects a narrative of exploration, evolution, and ultimately, the celebration of individual and collective stories—a testament to the power of understanding one’s past while forging ahead into the future.
