What It Means to Dream About Cats

In short: Cats in dreams point to independence, intuition or something you cannot control. Whether the cat came to you or kept away shifts the reading.

Have you ever dreamed about a cat and wondered what it means? You're not alone. Many people find themselves surprised by the commonality of dreaming about cats. Whether they're playful, aggressive, or just lounging around, cats in dreams can leave you feeling puzzled.

According to a 2016 study, nearly 39% of participants reported dreaming about animals. Understanding the dream about the cat meaning can reveal insights into your emotions, relationships, and daily life.

As the renowned dream expert Dr. Kelly Bulkeley says, “Dreams can provide us with a unique lens to view our inner world, helping us navigate through life’s complexities.”

In this article, we'll explore various aspects of dreaming about cats and what they signify for you.

Key Takeaways

  • Dreaming about cats is common and can provide insight into your emotions and relationships.

  • The nature of the cat in your dream (friendly or aggressive) can indicate your current emotional state.

  • Cultural significance plays a role in interpreting cat dreams, with cats symbolizing beauty, protection, and luck across different cultures.

  • Dreams about cats can reflect personal conflicts, emotional struggles, and the need for balance in life.

  • Specific scenarios, such as dreaming of kittens or aggressive cats, can indicate various aspects of your psyche, including vulnerability, inner turmoil, or a desire for connection.

What Do Dreams Mean?

Interpretation of Dreams

Dreams aren't always straightforward; they're often interpretations rather than fixed definitions. It's interesting to note that studies suggest around 95% of dreams are forgotten shortly after waking. This can make it hard to understand the true significance of a dream about cats.

Psychologist and dream analyst Dr. Patricia Garfield notes, “Dreams are like windows into our subconscious, and they can reveal our fears, hopes, and unresolved issues.” Therefore, when you dream about a cat, it might reflect a specific emotion or event that has impacted you recently.

Scientific Insights

According to psychologist Alan Eiser, dreams reflect our personal conflicts and emotional struggles. He emphasizes that daily stresses often manifest in our dreams, including when we dream about a cat. For instance, if you've been feeling overwhelmed at work or in your relationships, dreaming about a cat could symbolize a need for relaxation or a desire to escape those stresses.

Dr. Carl Jung, a famous psychiatrist, viewed dreams as a way to integrate our conscious and unconscious minds. He believed that animals in dreams, like cats, could represent aspects of our personalities. Jung famously said, “The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul.”

This shows the importance of paying attention to what your dreams might be revealing about your inner self.

What Do Cats Symbolize?

Cats have held various meanings across cultures for centuries. In Ancient Egypt, they were revered as symbols of beauty and protection, often associated with the goddess Bastet.

In Japanese and Chinese cultures, cats are seen as symbols of luck, fortune, and tranquility. The famous Japanese [maneki-neko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maneki-neko#:~:text=The%20maneki%2Dneko%20(%E6%8B%9B%E3%81%8D%E7%8C%AB%2C,raised%20in%20a%20beckoning%20gesture.), or beckoning cat, is thought to bring good luck to its owner. So, when you dream about a cat, it could reflect these cultural significances and your personal feelings about cats.

What Does It Mean If There Are Cats in My Dream?

Assessing the Cat's Nature

The first step in understanding your dream about cats is to assess the nature of the cat. Was it friendly or aggressive? The interactions can reveal much about your emotional state. The nature of the cat can symbolize how you feel about certain situations in your life. A friendly cat could indicate comfort, while an aggressive cat may signify unresolved conflict.

Psychological Standpoint

From a psychological perspective, Sigmund Freud suggested that cats in dreams can reflect tension and a need for freedom. If you dreamed about a cat acting aggressively, it might indicate that you feel trapped or stifled in some area of your life. Cats can often represent suppressed feelings and desires.

Feminine Energy

Cats are often linked to feminine energy. Dreaming about cats can imply a connection to your own femininity or your relationships with women. Cats have historically been associated with femininity, intuition, and independence. If you dream of a cat, consider how it relates to your personal relationships with women or your own feminine traits.

Spirit Animal Theory

Some people believe that cats can serve as spirit animals, symbolizing traits like independence, curiosity, and agility. If you dream about a cat, consider what qualities resonate with you. Cats embody the spirit of independence and self-reliance. They encourage us to trust our instincts and explore our inner desires.

Healthy or Sick Cats

A healthy cat in your dreams often represents inner harmony, while a sick cat can indicate a disconnect from your true self. Pay attention to how you feel about these cats in your dreams. The health of the cat can mirror your emotional and physical well-being.

Aggressive Cats

If you frequently dream about a cat that is aggressive, it could relate to feelings of solitude and difficulty accepting reality. Consider if there are unresolved issues in your life that need addressing. Aggressive cats might symbolize inner conflict that needs to be resolved for personal growth.

Twin Cats

Dreaming of twin cats may symbolize the balance between your personal needs and those of others. It can also serve as a caution against trusting too easily. Twin cats can reflect duality in your life, urging you to find harmony between self-care and caring for others.

Dream

So this dream was weird. I operate bulldozers, haul trucks, small rubber tire dozers and such at work; just one of many operators. The dream again surrounds Alica and I. In the beginning, we are operating bulldozers in the old west, working our land. For a lack of better wording, desperado bulldozers come and abscond with Alica. They leave me for dead. I am healed by an old Native American woman and she says once I am healed I have 2 choices, 1 to go after them to rescue Alica and the other is to just go on with life’s I was given a second chance. I choose to go after Alica, as in this dream we are connected, and much like the movie “The Searchers” I embark on a long journey. I track down the kidnappers but from a distance I see Alica is now working with them, not just running bulldozers, but blades and loaders. I slowly start picking off these desperados, causing accidents until I get down to the original 3 that had tried to kill me. Alica , from observation , appears to be going along with them like Stockholm syndrome, and as I approach them with a rifle, I pick off the third, drop the second with the rifle butt and a tomahawk to the head, Alica pulls a pistol on me and starts shooting. She doesn’t recognize me. The leader climbs on his dozer and tries to track over me. Alica is shooting at me as he tracks away after missing me. I grab a hold of her, show her that it’s me, she is paralyzed by the sight of me and collapses in my arms and I turn and watch the last bad guy apparently escaping, however I planted dynamite as a trap surrounding the camp and as he is reaching that site I watch as his bulldozer explodes and he is flung away on fire. I lay Alica on a blanket and make sure she is comfortable in her unconscious state and walk over to the man. He is broken and covered in burns but he is trying to gloat me. I crush his ankles and knees and I see an ant hill. I go to a saddle bag and get a bottle of honey and I pour it on him and sit back and as the day goes forward hear his screams as he slowly dies from his injuries as well as the ants eat him alive. Later a pack of coyotes finish him off and once his body is picked clean down to the skeleton I burn the bones with the other two bodies and chant the Native American revenge song. I carry Alica to a town, to a doctor and it takes several weeks to nurse her back to health. The doc says her mind is broken from repeated rape and torture. He says she will never be the same, but I continue to nurture her. Over time she sees that I will never leave her and as the time goes by she again finds her love for me, understands my devotion and we start anew with renewed vigor

Dream

I had a very real dream that I was in a very, very tall building. I was doing something in a very tall building. I was meeting important people, but the tall building looked kind of like the tallest building in Toronto, and it had a lot of open space. It was very scary to climb up this tall building because it was very narrow and it had a lot of big windows, and I was holding on to Julia on a leash. Julia was with me, Kylie was there too. I think Michael was there. A lot of different people were there, and I had to climb all the way up to the top of the building, and people told me, Don't worry about Julia. She can't go the way up. It's too dangerous, so let her stay here. So I told them, Yeah, but you have to hold on the leash because I don't want her to jump out or fall. So I gave Julia to somebody to hold her. I don't remember who, and I reached the top of the building, and it was, like, super high. And then I was worried about Julia, so I went down to look for her to make sure she's getting held and she doesn't fall out of the building. And then I picked her up and I held her in my arm. And I said, I can't believe I'm on the top. Wow, it's so beautiful up here. But it was a little challenging to get to the top of the building. It was a very strong dream, and I felt it in real life.

dream-about-plane-crash-and-death-2
Death

Dream

I had the craziest dream. Let's start from the beginning. My brother, me, my sister, and my mom. Actually, no. I think it was just my brother, my sister, and I when we had first went somewhere for a vacation. I don't know where we were, but we flew out somewhere, and then my mom flew in a little bit later. I just know that we had to go back with mom. But I remember we had to look for a flight back, and we got this flight, but I felt like something was off. This pilot was acting weird, super jittery, super on edge, sweaty, and I just had a feeling I was gonna die the day that I went on that plane. And what happened? I died that day. So did my brother and my sister and my mom. I remember I was watching it in, like, second person almost, like I was in a different body, watching myself die. It's kind of hard to explain, but, like, let's just say I was watching from my phone from somewhere else, and I was watching the plane and the feet of the plane get closer and closer to the floor. And we were over the ocean. Or no, maybe I think it was land because there were a few survivors. But it was like an entire movie inside my mind, because it transitioned. Once the plane hit the floor, it transitioned into, like, almost, you know, like the cameras where you can see everything that's in the dark, where it was, like, kind of green, and it was gray and white, and it was like a camera like that, and it was of, like, a reporter or something, and I don't know if they had a drone out there, but they had a drone out there, and it was on land, and they were reporting, Hey, we have a few survivors. There's movement. There's movement, because nobody was able to get to us at that point. It had literally, I feel like, just happened, like maybe ten minutes before the drone got there. And they were like, There's movement. There's movement. So there's survivors. There's survivors. And I feel like I'm watching this from a fucking TV almost. But it didn't look like it was me sitting on a couch watching a TV. It was just the screen of the TV in my mind. And I literally have a mental breakdown. I'm like, This is what it feels like to be dead? Right? So I'm having a panic attack, literally, and one of the first things I think of is my dad. How do I tell my dad that I'm dead? Is my dad gonna be okay? He's not gonna be okay. And first thing I thought of was he's gonna go back into a relapse. He's gonna start doing drugs again. Because it wasn't just me who was dead. It was me, my brother, my sister, and my mom. And I just remember, I think I got a... Roy and I were together somehow, somehow, but I couldn't find my sister. And I don't know if there's, like, this manual fucking book or something, but there was an app where the dead communicated with each other. But if they didn't have the app, there was no way of communicating. And I don't think she had the app to communicate with me, and I was trying to find her. I was really trying to find her. But in the meantime, I found AJ. AJ was alive. I was dead, and I touched him, and he kind of jumped a little. But he couldn't see me. And then I touched him again, and he jumped some more, and I said, AJ! AJ! And he was like, What the fuck? Can you hear me? And I was like, Yes, AJ, it's Aaliyah. It's Aaliyia. He said, Aaliyah? I was like, AJ, I'm so sorry to tell you this, but I'm dead. So is Roy, so is Nevaeh, so is Mom, from the plane crash. Look up the plane crash. And he looks up the plane crash, and we were dead. So that was just one person. And then we did it to someone else. I think to, like, a friend of mine, like Tay or something. But it wasn't Tay. It was someone else. But it was, like, a friend, like Tay. Anyways, I just remember saying constantly, constantly throughout the stream, Oh my God, I'm dead now. This is what it's like? I can go to the dealership and grab the fastest fucking car, and I can travel now. I just remember saying that, like I can travel now. I can go see the world without any consequence. I can go get the fastest car. And it was almost like a community of its own. All the dead were together and all the alive were together. It was freaky. Yeah, it was, it was, it was freaky. I wish I could tell you all the minute details to this dream, because it was very interesting. It was like my mind was trying to comprehend death. Crazy.
