Many Meanings For a Dream

This is a mostly philosophical question that is very difficult to answer in any definitive way. Freud said that dreams, like religious scriptures, are theoretically inexhaustible in interpretation. Being inherently poetic and metaphorical, they can unfold into a myriad of interpretations that themselves transform previous interpretations of the dream’s symbols, and then again, so on and so on.

That being said, the main or most helpful, practical interpretations of a dream are often the ones yielded by oneself or someone who has extensive experience and an intuitive talent with dream interpretation. Oftentimes the best interpretations will only come about years later after one discovers more about themselves through other dreams, which is why it is important to keep a dream journal.
